Sporting Lisbon played their final game of the regular season, as they traveled north of Porto, for a match against Rio Ave.
In a match up with no meaning to Sporting, and the Portuguese Cup final next week, several starters were benched, including captain Rui Patricio, Adrien, and William Carvalho. Nevertheless, the Leoes grabbed the 1-0 win thanks to a goal from Nani.
Sporting finished the year with a 22-2-10 record. With the regular season now completed, there is only one game left in the 2014/2015 calendar, the Cup final. That match will be played May 31 against Braga.
Braga has only won the Cup once, and it was a long time ago, back during the 1965/1966 season. Their last Cup final appearance was in 1998, a loss to Beira-Mar. Sporting has won the Cup 15 times, the latest of which came in 2008, which gave them back-to-back Cup wins. Their last appearance in the final was in 2012, a surprise loss to Academica.
The Sporting “B” team finished their regular season in the Second Division with a 3-2 win over the Braga “B” team. Sporting went up 2-0 before Braga tied late 2-2. But in the 90th minute, Luis Eloi scored the game-winner. Diego Rubio and Fabio Martins also scored.
Sporting “B” finished with the best record of all the “B” teams in the Second Division, 22-12-12, good for fifth in the league, one point ahead of the Benfica “B” team. Diego Rubio, who only played in the second half of the season, finished as the leading goal scorer with 14 goals.
