USL: Rudy Sees Red, Mulgrew Starts in Rhino Win
- Updated: July 9, 2015
Revolution loanee Tyler Rudy picked up his second assist of the season, but was later red carded during the Rochester Rhinos’ 2-1 victory over FC Montreal on Wednesday at Sahlen’s Stadium.
Inside of 15 minutes, Rudy deilvered a well-hit free kick to Colin Rolfe, who put it through to give the Rhinos the early lead. But Rudy’s night didn’t end the way he envisioned it after he was red carded following his second caution of the match in the 64th minute.
Fellow Revolution loanee Timi Mulgrew earned his first start since April and went 83 minutes on the left side of midfield. Although he did not register a shot on goal, he drew the foul that led to Rudy’s 15th minute free kick.
The Rhinos’ second strike came in the 32nd minute when Christian Volesky forced a turnover and made a single-handed effort to put away his sixth goal of the season, and fifth goal against Montreal alone.
After the break, FC Montreal took control of the game, but was unable to make it onto the scoresheet until the 85th minute when Frederic Gravelle notched a late strike, marking the first goal the Rhinos conceded at home in the 2015 campaign. In the end, though, the Rhinos survived to beat Montreal for the fourth time in as many tries.
The Rhinos now have a 10-0-6 record moves them to 36 points, which keeps them five points above the Charleston Battery, who also won on Wednesday, in the USL’s Eastern Conference.
The win also gives the Rhinos a perfect 6-0-0 record at home and extends their franchise-record unbeaten streak to 16 games.
The Rhinos will travel to Toronto this weekend to play Toronto FC II on Saturday
