The Breakers came into Wednesday’s match against the Portland Thorns on short rest and succeeded only in showing it after they dropped a 5-2 loss in front of 15,624 at Providence Park in Portland, Ore.

Four days after dropping a 2-1 loss to Seattle, the Breakers were put into an early deficit when Jodie Taylor opened the scoring in the 16th minute. The Breakers benefited from a Kat Williamson own goal in the 36th minute, but the walls came crashing down during the second half when McCall Zerboni (49th and 53rd minutes), Mana Shim (54th minute) and Allie Long (66th minute) all scored in rapid succession.

Kristie Mewis pulled one back from the spot in the 87th minute, but by then, it was too little, too late for the Breakers with time winding down.

With the loss, the last-place Breakers (3-10-3, 12 points) have now lost four in a row, and are winless in their last nine. The win allowed the fifth-place Thorns (5-6-4, 19 points) to claim victory in their second straight after losing three in a row.

The Breakers will attempt to get back in the win column during Saturday’s home finale against the Washington Spirit at Soldiers Field Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:00pm.
