Following the international break, Portuguese League action resumed this past weekend with Sporting looking to stay atop the table.
The Leoes were away on Sunday for a matchup against Rio Ave, who were also undefeated after three weeks thanks to a 1-0-2 mark (five points). The guests took the lead when Adrien returned to his penalty kick duties and scored the first goal from the spot. Islam Slimani doubled the lead minutes before halftime to give Sporting a two-goal lead going into the break. Yazalde cut Sporting’s lead to 2-1 in the second half, but he and his teammates were unable to equalize as Sporting hung on for the 2-1 win.
After four weeks of league action, Sporting are atop of the table with FC Porto on 10 points (3-0-1). Sporting are one point ahead of Benfica, who are third, and two points ahead of Pacos de Ferreira for the fourth spot.
Sporting begin their Europa League campaign this Thursday against Lokomotiv Moscow. After that, their next league match will be at home against Nacional da Madeira on Monday.
