Gillette’s Copa America Dates Announced

Gillette-1

Mark your mobile calendars for a trio of dates in June, local soccer fans.

On Thursday, CONCACAF announced that Gillette Stadium will host a pair of Copa America group stage matches on Jun. 10 and 12, with a quarterfinal match set for Jun. 18.

The Jun. 10 match will feature a Group D matchup between two as-of-yet undetermined seeds, while the Jun. 12 match will pit Brazil against a Group B foe that will be determined in the coming weeks. The Jun. 18 quarterfinal will feature the Group D winner and the second-seed from Group C.

The United States will play its Group stage matches on Jun. 3 in Santa Clara, Calif., Jun. 7 in Chicago, and Jun. 10 in Houston, Tx.

“Copa America Centenario 2016 in the United States is huge,” U.S. head coach Jurgen Klinsmann said in a statement. “It’s almost like a World Cup. The Copa America is similar to the European Championship, so it’s kind of just one step below the World Cup and having that hosted in the United States with big teams like Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Uruguay and our neighbors Mexico along with other CONCACAF nations joining in a 16-team tournament next summer is an unbelievable opportunity.”

Copa America 2016 will be the largest tournament held in Foxborough since the 1994 World Cup.
