Player Ratings: New England Revolution vs. D.C. United

After each match the contributors to New England Soccer Today will rate the performances of the Revolution players who made an appearance on a 1 to 10 scale (1 horrendous, 5 average, 10 perfection). This week Brian O’Connell, Carl Setterlund and Sean Donahue contributed ratings for the Revs’ 2-1 victory over D.C. United.

Matt Reis – Average Rating:  6.33 (Brian 6, Carl 6.5, Sean 6.5)
Wasn’t tested nearly as much this week with a strong backline in front of him, but was confident on the five saves he made. (Brian) … His confident distribution led to the first goal and you can’t fault him for getting beat on a penalty by the likes of Davies. (Carl) … Excellent commanding his box all night, nothing he could do on the penalty. (Sean)

Didier Domi – Average Rating: 6.83 (Brian 7, Carl 6.5, Sean 7)
Impressive performance. Shut down D.C.’s right wing and added life to the attack. (Brian) … Showed flashes in his debut of the quality that earned him a career in Europe and can be dangerous on the attack. (Carl) … Excellent debut. Solid in the back and created some promising opportunities going forward. (Sean)

A.J. Soares – Average Rating: 6.33 (Brian 6.5, Carl 6, Sean 6.5)
Better composed in his second MLS match. Made a few nice tackles and communicated well with Coria. (Brian) … Another poised, 90-minute performance from the rookie. (Carl) …More composed than his debut. Rarely troubled by the D.C. attack. (Sean)

Franco Coria – Average Rating: 6.67 (Brian 7.5, Carl 5.5, Sean 7)
Confident and composed until he picked up a hamstring injury early in the second half. Impeccable defending. (Brian) … Looked good in the first half, but it’s hard to grade him much higher on half a game. (Carl) … Another great performance by the Argentinean, unfortunately cut short by injury. (Sean

Kevin Alston – Average Rating: 5.5 (Brian 5, Carl 5.5, Sean 6)
Looked decent in his first action of the season, but was tentative on the attack. Will get better as his hamstring heals. (Brian) … Solid for the most part, but not spectacular had occasional trouble with Davies. (Carl) …
Good return from injury, but final pass in the attacking was lacking. (Sean)

Pat Phelan – Average Rating:  6.67 (Brian 6.5, Carl 7, Sean 6.5)
Played his heart out in the first half. Good tackles, man-marking exceptional, good off the ball movement. (Brian) … Phelan earned the penalty for the Revs with his hustle and is always fearlessly heading into the fray.  (Carl) … Solid defensively breaking up plays with some well timed tackles and good attacking foray to earn the penalty kick. (Sean)

Stephen McCarthy – Average Rating: 6 (Brian 6, Carl 6, Sean 6)
Another quality performance from the rookie center half. Nothing lost at all with him in the lineup. (Brian) … This early in his career, it’s a credit to him that he played a full game against a decent midfield without any notable negative plays.  (Carl) … The rookie put in another strong performance. Rarely turned the ball over and kept the play moving in the attack. (Sean)

Shalrie Joseph – Average Rating: 7.5 (Brian 7, Carl 8, Sean 7.5)
Distribution top notch, organized well, and kept his teammates on point for much of the match. (Brian) … Was in the thick of things during all the important moments for the Revs, as always. (Carl) … With Perovic out even more pressure was on Joseph to lead the attack. The Revs captain delivered, playing several dangerous passes forward, including one for Schilawski’s goal. Well taken Penalty. (Sean)

Sainey Nyassi – Average Rating: 5.33 (Brian 5, Carl 5.5, Sean 5.5)
Did the best he could out of position on the left wing, but his contributions were few and far in between. (Brian) … Can partner well with Domi, but didn’t use his pace as well as usual. (Carl) … Struggle a bit defensively early, but made several nice runs forward. (Sean)

Zak Boggs – Average Rating: 4.83 (Brian 4, Carl 5.5, Sean 5)
Seemed somewhat out of sync with his teammates. Took an elbow to his forehead before he was able to get involved in the attack. (Brian) … Mixed it up well before being forced off the field in the first half. (Carl) … Didn’t see much of the ball before leaving the game injured. (Sean)

Zack Schilawski – Average Rating: 7.33 (Brian 7, Carl 7.5, Sean 7.5)
Lucky not to have gotten a handball call prior to his goal, but overall, spearheaded some dangerous chances and tested the DC defense a number of times. (Brian) … Lucked out he wasn’t called for handling the ball on his goal, but played well the entire match. His style of play will never overwhelm. (Carl) … Fantastic performance in a tough role as the Revs lone striker. Kept the attack going with smart runs and passes,  scored a nice goal, and was a general nuisance to the D.C. backline. (Sean)

(sub) Kheli Dube – Average Rating: 5.17 (Brian 5, Carl 5, Sean 5.5)
Decent service for a striker moonlighting as a midfielder. Corners were good, but both shots went well wide. (Brian) … Was active and moving but never made much of an impact. (Carl) … Some solid combination play with Schilawski cutting inside, but his service is lacking as a right midfielder. (Sean)

(sub) Ryan Cochrane – Average Rating: 4.83 (Brian 5, Carl 4.5, Sean 5)
Came on for Coria, but failed to match his predecessor’s stellar performance. Foul on Joseph Ngewnya led to DC penalty. (Brian) … A sturdy second half otherwise is offset by his causing the United PK, even if it was a weak call. (Carl) … Revs defense looked a bit less organized after Coria left, but Cochrane did well with a tough task. Losses points for giving up the penalty kick. (Sean)

(sub) Ryan Kinne – Average: N/R
Kinne didn’t see enough minutes in his debut to get a rating.
