Tierney’s Tally Salvages Draw at NYC
- Updated: March 26, 2016
Chris Tierney’s deflected free kick equalizer allowed the Revolution to salvage a 1-1 draw against New York City FC on Saturday at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, NY.
In the 39th minute, Tierney blasted a free kick from 19 yards that took a fortuitous deflection off the leg of Steven Mendoza before it settled into the back of Josh Saunders’ net.
Tierney’s strike canceled out a 10th minute tally from former Western Mass Pioneer Tommy McNamara, who poked through the rebound of David Villa’s shot off the crossbar.
A 51st minute red card to Gershon Koffie left the locals shorthanded for the second straight week. Koffie was sent off following a reckless challenge on McNamara.
With the draw, the Revolution’s quest for win no. 1 will continue on for another week as their record went to 0-1-3 (3 points). City fell short of victory for the third straight week to go to 1-1-2 (4 points).
The Revolution return to action on Friday – yes, Friday – for a conference clash against longtime rival New York Red Bulls at Gillette Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:00pm. The locals went 2-1-0 against the former MetroStars, taking both home contests during the regular season series.
