USASA: Kendall Wanderers to Represent Mass. in Werner Fricker Open Cup
- Updated: April 4, 2016
Bay State Soccer League (BSSL) side Kendall Wanderers will represent Massachusetts in this year’s Werner Fricker USASA Open Cup tournament after beating New England Luso-American Soccer Association (NELASA) side Juventus USA 2-0 last week at Madison Park High School in Roxbury, Mass.
Wanderers got their goals from a pair of Francis Mulkern strikes in the 20th and 80th minutes to secure their spot in the tournament, which features USASA-affiliated amateur sides from Region I (Northeast and Mid-Atlantic) and Region II (Midwest).
The BSSL side will take on Connecticut state champion FSA Inter (Connecticut Soccer League) in the first round of the Region I bracket on Sunday in Farmington, Ct.
The Region I Finals will be played in June at the Ukrainian American Sports Center in Horsham, Pennsylvania. The winner will represent Region I at the Cup Final hosted by one of the two finalists in July.
In 1999, USASA established the Werner Fricker USASA Open Cup to recognize the champion among its own participants. The Cup continues through the efforts of Region I and Region II with the hope that the other regions will enter in the future.
