Player Ratings: New England Revolution vs. Portland Timbers

After each match the contributors to New England Soccer Today will rate the performances of the Revolution players who made an appearance on a 1 to 10 scale (1 horrendous, 5 average, 10 perfection). This week Brian O’Connell, Carl Setterlund and Sean Donahue contributed ratings for the Revs’ 1-1 draw with Portland.

Matt Reis – Average Rating: 5.33 (Brian 4.5, Carl 6, Sean 5.5)
Bobbled a couple of typically-easy saves, never looked especially confident. Injury kept him from goal-kick duty. (Brian) … Wasn’t called upon to make too many difficult saves, but he also wasn’t too much to blame for Jewsbury’s goal. (Carl) … Didn’t look fully recovered from his right adductor strain, but nothing he could do on Jewsbury’s goal. (Sean)

Didier Domi – Average Rating: 6.33 (Brian 6, Carl 6.5, Sean 6.5)
Useful on the left, went forward when needed, continues to shine. (Brian) … Domi was again solid on defense and a useful threat going forward and fullbacks like that are a luxury not many MLS teams have. The Frenchman has quickly shown to be a smart buy. (Carl) … Looked dangerous at times going forward and a strong defensive performance. Dangerous set pieces. (Sean)

A.J. Soares – Average Rating: 6 (Brian 5, Carl 6.5, Sean 6.5)
Quiet for much of the night, although he paired pretty well with Cochrane. Launched Reis’ goal kicks deep into the middle third. (Brian) … Soares continues to live up to his billing as the next Parkhurst. He isn’t there yet, but his composure out there was noticeable. (Carl) … Looks more confident each game. Another smart performance. (Sean)

Ryan Cochrane – Average Rating:  5.5 (Brian 6.5, Carl 4.5, Sean 5.5)
Filled in Coria pretty well, got into good positions, and did well to contain Cooper, who had a pretty quiet night. (Brian) … Add a point for the mustache. Cooper is a handful with his size, but Cochrane is making us hope Franco Coria has a speedy recovery. (Carl) … Decent job filling in for Coria, but committed some unneeded fouls in dangerous areas. (Sean)

Kevin Alston – Average Rating:  4.5 (Brian 4, Carl 4.5, Sean 5)
Overcommitted on Hall’s assist; gave far too much space on the right, a bit too ambitious on the attack. (Brian) … We’ve come to expect better from Alston. He wasn’t terrible, but he perhaps should have been better positioned to challenge Jewsbury. Was smartly fouled by Portland the few times he joined the attack. (Carl) … Partly to blame for Jewsbury’s goal and final ball was lacking going forward. (Sean)

Pat Phelan – Average Rating: 5.17 (Brian 5, Carl 5, Sean 5.5)
Solid performance, although he seemed to disappear from the attack this week.  (Brian) … It was sort of a nothing game from Phelan, who didn’t do too much positive, but at least didn’t do anything egregious either. (Carl) … Some decent forays going forward. Solid performance overall. (Sean)

Stephen McCarthy – Average Rating: 5.83 (Brian 5, Carl 6.5, Sean 6)
Opportunistic goal, played well in first 30 minutes before frustration and inconsistency set in. (Brian) … Give the kid a round of applause for a well-taken goal. McCarthy has settled into his role in the middle of the field better than any rookie second-rounder can be expected to. (Carl) … Great goal and decent performance overall, but a couple of mistimed tackles by the rookie midfielder (Sean)

Shalrie Joseph – Average Rating: 7 (Brian 7.5, Carl 6, Sean 7.5)
Excellent distribution, pushed up when needed, added fire to the attack, a one-man wrecking crew. (Brian) … Not one of his better games, but Joseph was in the mix as always. Like the rest of the team though, things just didn’t click for him on the whole. (Carl) … Played great balls going forward and controlled the midfield for the Revs. Did everything he could to push the Revs into the attack. (Sean)

Sainey Nyassi – Average Rating: 5.17 (Brian 4, Carl 6, Sean 5.5)
Far too predictable on the left, almost found the game-winner, first touch lacking much of the night. (Brian) … Nyassi’s showed pace as always and seemed to me to be the only Revs player that made Portland nervous. (Carl) … Final ball is still lacking and Nyassi needs to learn to cross with his left foot to truly be a threat on the left side. Looked more dangerous when he moved to the right and combined well with Mansally, but should’ve had the game winner. (Sean)

Zak Boggs – Average Rating: 5.67 (Brian 5.5, Carl 5.5, Sean 6.)
A thoroughbred, good pace, created chances, and had a nose for the ball but burned out after the hour. (Brian) … Covered a lot of ground early on but looked like he wore out toward the end. I applaud the effort, but the Revs could have used fresher legs as they tried to find another goal. (Carl) … Great effort by the second-year player. Involved in several attacks. Looked like he could have used a sub late in the game. (Sean)

Zack Schilawski – Average Rating: 5.33 (Brian 5, Carl 5.5, Sean 5.5)
Hard to fault him for getting pummeled often by Portland’s defenders, couldn’t do much with shoddy service. (Brian) … I don’t like the way Shilawski fits into Nicol’s current formation, which I think requires a more potent forward. Even when he plays pretty good, Shilawski isn’t the type to overwhelm anyone. (Carl) … Started well, but not involved enough in the attack as the Revs looked to find a winner. (Sean)

(sub) Kenny Mansally – Average Rating: 5.5 (Brian 5, Carl 5.5, Sean 6)
Added energy to the attack, but it would’ve been nice to see him get a hold of Nyassi’s lazy shot/pass in the 79th. (Brian) … Nearly helped Nyassi find a game-winner toward the end, but overall Mansally was good not great. (Carl) … Did his job providing a spark off the bench and should have had an assist had Nyassi done better with his late opportunity. (Sean)
