Breakers Edged in Opener

Offseason acquisition Libby Stout made six saves to keep it close, but it wasn’t enough as the Boston Breakers fell 1-0 in their season-opening contest against the Washington Spirit on Saturday at Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyd, Md.
Stout, who took over the goalkeeping reigns after shot-stopper Alyssa Naeher was traded to Chicago during the winter, denied Cali Farquharson in the 85th minute to give the guests hope until the end. But former Breaker Joanna Lohman’s third-minute bicycle kick strike stood to seal the win for the Spirit.
Louise Schillgard nearly equalized in the 23rd minute on an inswinging corner that nearly snuck by Washington goalkeeper Stephanie Labbe before she made a last-ditch effort to deny it.
The Breakers will return to action on Sunday, Apr. 24 for their home opener against Seattle Reign FC at Jordan Field (formerly Soldiers Field Soccer Stadium). Kickoff is 6:30pm.
