Sputtering Start for U.S. in Copa Opener

If the United States somehow manages to make a deep run in Copa America tournament, Friday’s performance certainly won’t serve as the springboard.
Christian Zapata put the Americans in early hole they’d never climb out of as Colombia cruised to a 2-0 win during Friday’s tournament opener at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif.
Zapata struck inside of eight minutes while James Rodriguez buried it from the spot in the 42nd minute in a match the U.S. struggled to assert itself in.
Attleboro, Mass. native Geoff Cameron nearly scored a breakthrough on a header that was cleared off the line late in the first half.
The U.S. will return to action on Tuesday against Costa Rica at Solider Field in Chicago for their second Group A stage game.
