Juan Agudelo gave the Revolution an early lead, but the Rapids were simply too much as the locals dropped a 3-1 loss in Saturday’s Desert Diamond Cup clash in Tucson, Ariz.

Agudelo, who donned a clear protective mask following facial surgery last week, tallied in the 19th minute after tapping through a ball from Antonio Mlinar Delamea, who corralled a Chris Tierney corner to set up the opportunity.

But the Revolution striker’s effort was the only highlight of the afternoon for New England, who coughed up a pair of goals right before the break. Caleb Calvert collected the first in the 44th minute while Boston University product Dominique Badji broke through in the 45+1 minute. Calvert secured another goal in the 60th minute.

Revolution coach Jay Heaps fielded a first team lineup for Saturday’s contest, and that unit went approximately 73 minutes before a slew of substitutes were introduced. Brad Knighton got the start between the sticks while Cody Cropper entered the match in the 60th minute.

Delamea, who missed Wednesday’s match due to visa issues, partnered with London Woodberry at center back.

With the loss, the Revolution fall to 2-2-1 on the preseason, and are 0-2-0 in Desert Diamond Cup play.

New England returns to action on Wednesday for Matchday 3 of the tournament against Sporting Kansas City. Kickoff is 1:00pm ET.
