Longtime Revolution defender Darrius Barnes will have a new home in 2017 after he joined the New York Cosmos (NASL) on Friday.
Barnes, 30, spent a total of eight seasons in New England (2009-2016), and played 129 matches during the course of his Revolution career. The experienced defender, who played all three positions across the backline during his time in Foxboro, never received a red card.
“I am looking forward to playing this season with the New York Cosmos,” said Barnes in a club release Friday. “This is, without a doubt, one of the most regarded soccer clubs in the United States and one can only feel proud of defending its colors.”
The veteran defender played four games for the Revolution last season before his contract expired in December. He recently trialed with the Seattle Sounders before signing with the Cosmos.
“Darrius is yet another great addition to our 2017 squad,” said Cosmos Head Coach and Sporting Director, Giovanni Savarese, in a club release. “As we get closer to our season opener, we want to make sure we prepare our roster the best possible way and adding an experienced player like Darrius is getting us closer to where we want to be.”
