Bay State Soccer League’s GPS Omens pulled off a 2-0 upset victory over PDL’s GPS Portland Phoenix in Wednesday’s first round U.S. Open Cup tie at Deering High School in Portland, Me.
Omens wasted no time setting the stage for the shock result on a second minute strike from Jake Johnson before Ben Shuleva added another in the 25th minute.
Wednesday’s win was the first Open Cup victory for Omens, who previously entered the tournament as GPS Massachusetts (2015) and Mass Premier Soccer (2013). Omens entered Wednesday’s match as the reigning BSSL champions after pulling off the first undefeated record in league history (16-0-2).
The USASA side will attempt to author another upset in next week’s second round matchup on May 17 against Boston City FC at Brother Gilbert Stadium in Malden, Mass.
