Player Ratings: New England Revolution vs. Sporting Kansas City

After each match the contributors to New England Soccer Today will rate the performances of the New England Revolution players who made an appearance on a 1 to 10 scale (1 horrendous, 5 average, 10 perfection). This week Carl Setterlund and Sean Donahue contributed ratings for the Revs’ 3-2 win over Sporting Kansas City.

Matt Reis – Average rating: 6.25 (Carl 7, Sean 5.5)
On a sloppy, messy night Reis largely remained in control and showed he can still rise to the occasion. (Carl) … Made some key saves, but should’ve stopped Kansas City’s first goal. (Sean)

Kevin Alston – Average Rating: 4.75 (Carl 5, Sean 4.5)
Had a few mishaps due to the weather but averted disaster. Oh wait… except for that phantom penalty he gave up. (Carl) … Some dreadful passing out of the back and awful shooting going forward, but managed to use his pace to recover from most of his defensive errors. (Sean)

Franco Coria – Average Rating: 6.5 (Carl 6.5, Sean 6.5)
I flat out like this guy’s style. Only chink in the armor I saw was that he was a bit too relaxed leading up to KC’s first goal. (Carl) … Goes hard into tackles, but manages to time them perfectly each time. It takes a lot to beat Coria on the ground or in the air. (Sean)

A.J. Soares – Average Rating: 6 (Carl 6, Sean 6)
It was a game that didn’t flatter too many defenders, but Soares continues to look more like a veteran than a rookie out there. (Carl) … Solid, if quiet, performance from the center back. No noticeable errors. (Sean)

Didier Domi – Average Rating: 5 (Carl 5, Sean 5)
Got broken down a little bit on Kamara’s goal and showed signs of trying to compensate for his nicked up, aging legs. (Carl) … Beat on Kamara’s goal. Tried to get forward, but was rarely found by his teammates. (Sean)

Zak Boggs – Average Rating: 6 (Carl 6, Sean 6)
Competed well and showed he’s worthy of a starting nod even as Stevie Nicol’s attacking options have increased. (Carl) … Excellent assist on the winning goal, but most of the Revs attacks came through Perovic on the left in the early going. (Sean)

Stephen McCarthy – Average Rating: 5.25 (Carl 5, Sean 5.5)
He was a little bit a disappearing act after he got booked early on, I thought, but maybe that’s just because I couldn’t stop ogling Feilhaber. (Carl) … Solid patrolling the midfield next to Feilhaber in the first half. Kept it simple. (Sean)

Benny Feilhaber – Average Rating: 7.25 (Carl 7.5, Sean 7)
Early returns seem to indicate that Feilhaber’s skill set is just what the Revs needed. I don’t want to get ahead of myself, but we’ve rarely seen that type of high-quality passing since the heyday of Steve Ralston. (Carl) … Great distribution by Feilhaber all match and an excellent job setting up Perovic’s goal. (Sean)

Marko Perovic – Average Rating: 6.75 (Carl 6.5, Sean 7)
It’s a shame he picked up that knee injury because he seemed to gel with the talent around him and was rounding into pretty good form. (Carl) … By far his best game since coming back from injury. Perovic looked back to the form that made him team MVP last year until he was forced out of the game with a knee injury. (Sean)

Shalrie Joseph – Average Rating: 6.75 (Carl 7.5, Sean 6)
His equalizer couldn’t have come at a bigger time. I’m actually grading him down a half a point for flubbing that big chance just before halftime, so kind of a backhanded compliment there. (Carl) … Looked poor while playing striker in the first half, but was his usual self in the second half when he was moved back into the midfield and scored the crucial equalizing goal for the Revs. (Sean)

Rajko Lekic – Average Rating: 6 (Carl 6.5, Sean 5.5)
Obviously his goal was huge and it was a skillful header. He was sticking his nose in dirty places, drawing fouls and whining to the referee all night like a good striker should. (Carl) … Great goal, but Lekic’s touch was lacking most of the night and he should have done better with some other chances. (Sean)

(sub) Kenny Mansally – Average Rating: 5.5 (Carl 5.5, Sean 5.5)
I thought Mansally was a little more in the middle of things than usual. I’m predicting increased minutes in the near future. (Carl) … Great free kick to set-up Joseph’s goal and solid job filling in when Perovic went out injured. (Sean)

(sub) Zack Schilawski – Average Rating: 4.75 (Carl 5, Sean 4.5)
He didn’t play poorly per se, but Lekic showed why Shilawski’s overall style of play is just less conducive to results. (Carl) … Forgot he was on the pitch shortly after he entered. (Sean)
