The Boston Breakers fell into an early rut and never recovered in Saturday’s 2-0 loss to Portland Thorns FC at Providence Park in Portland, OR.
Breakers defender Julie King gifted the hosts an own goal inside of one minute while Thorns FC midfielder Amandine Henry tallied in the fifth minute. Goalkeeper AD Franch didn’t need to make a single save to collect the clean sheet.
The best effort for the guests came in the 53rd minute when Natasha Dowie played it through to Rose Lavelle, who fired a shot that was blocked on the slide by defender Emily Sonnett.
A stoppage time dismissal to Allysha Chapman forced the Breakers to finish shorthanded.
With the loss, the Breakers fell to 2-3-2 (8 points), putting them in seventh place on the NWSL table. Thorns FC improved to 3-1-3 (12 points), good for fifth place.
The Breakers will be back in action on Saturday, Jun. 3 when they face the Orlando Pride at Orlando City Stadium. Kickoff is 7:30pm.
