Boston City Drops 2nd Straight Loss
- Updated: June 15, 2017
Boston City FC dropped their second consecutive match Wednesday night by the score of 2-1, losing in the final minutes in their first ever meeting against TSF Academy.
Without leading scorer Jhonata Batista, the Lions turned to midfielder Felipe Dutra to fill in at forward, while rotating defensive midfielder Pedro Silva, left back Leonardo Calvalho, and goalkeeper Alexssandro into the starting lineup.
After the first half ended scoreless, Steve Zanudio blasted a shot into the top corner from the top of the box in the 53rd minute. The lead was nearly doubled following a handball in the box, but Alexssandro, making his BCFC debut, stopped the penalty, keeping the Lions in the game.
Minutes later, Boston City drew level from a chip by Dutra, leveling the game in the 80th minute by a score of 1-1.
The match looked headed for a stalemate until Luis Mendoza’s long range blast dipped over Alexssandro’s head, giving TSF Academy the lead. With little time remaining, the Lions were unable to produce a response.
While the match was an inter-division game against TSF Academy of the Atlantic Blue Conference Division, the loss had a noticeable impact on the Boston City’s chances at a division title. Wednesday’s match represented their game-in-hand, providing a chance to climb closer to Kingston Stockade (5-1-1, 16 points), who defeated them 2-1 on Saturday.
With the loss to TSF, Boston City (3-2-2, 11 points) now is tied with Hartford City FC and look to close their three-game road trip with a victory over local rival, Rhode Island Reds FC, who sport a 2-3-1 record (7 points) and battled the Lions to a 3-3 draw in Malden earlier this year.
The Rhode Island Reds-Boston City FC match will kickoff at 5:00pm Sunday at Brown University in Providence, R.I.
