New Haven-based Elm City Express made it a debut season to remember after locking up the top spot in the Atlantic Blue Conference Division with a 4-0 thrashing of TSF FC (New Jersey) on Saturday at DePaul Catholic High School in Wayne, N.J.
Cristhian Hernandez opened the account inside of four minutes while Istvan Kanyo widen the gap in the 20th minute. The Express ran away with it when Lucas Gabriel Sousa and Shaquille Saunchez each tallied in the 42nd minute and 57th minute, respectively.
With the win, the Express finished their inaugural season atop the division with an impressive 9-1-2 record, good for a 29 point haul. They also registered a whopping plus-22 goal differential, and only conceded five goals during the regular season. The Express defense was anchored by former Portuguese Liga keeper Matt Jones, who was loaned to the Philadelphia Union prior to the 2016 season.
The Express will await the results of Wednesday’s divisional semi-final between Brooklyn Italians and TSF FC to find out who they’ll face in the divisional final on Saturday at Yale University’s Reese Stadium in New Haven.
