After each match the contributors to New England Soccer Today will rate the performances of the New England Revolution players who made an appearance on a 1 to 10 scale (1 horrendous, 5 average, 10 perfection). This week Sean Donahue contributed ratings for the Revs 3-1 loss to the Columbus Crew.
Matt Reis – 5
Made some big saves, but at fault for the second goal. Can’t leave his net on a free kick and not get the ball.
Kevin Alston – 5
Unlucky on the own goal, but otherwise did well guarding the speedy Rogers.
A.J. Soares – 3
Beaten by James on the Crew’s second goal and left Renteria unmarked on the third. Blew two fantastic chances for the Revs on the other end. Not a good night for the rookie.
Darrius Barnes – 5
Solid, if quiet, game from Barnes. Can’t be faulted on any of the goals.
Chris Tierney – 4
The Crew switched Rogers to the right to take advantage of his speed against Tierney in the second half. It worked. Tierney’s set pieces weren’t great either. Credit for taking a rare short throw-in to set-up the Revs lone goal.
Stephen McCarthy – 4
Caught ball watching on Chad Marshall’s early header and had a few poor turnovers.
Pat Phelan – 4.5
Good assist on Feilhaber’s goal, but otherwise his passing was poor in the first half. Weak header led to Mendoza’s early chance.
Shalrie Joseph – 4.5
Was all over the field, but struggled to make an impact on the match. Expected more against the Crew’s weakened central midfield.
Zack Schilawski – 4
Struggled on the right and often forced deep into the Revs half to defend. Didn’t add to the attack outside of one long shot.
Benny Feilhaber – 6
Great goal and led the attack, while also working hard on defense. Tried to do too much at times and turned the ball over leading to the Crew’s equalizer in one instance of that.
Milton Caraglio – 5
Showed flashes of his quality, including an attempted bicycle kick, but like Feilhaber, at times attempted to do too much. Still not match fit.
(sub) Kenny Mansally – 4
Failed to make much of an impact off the bench. Worked hard to defend Rogers on the third goal, but couldn’t quite catch up.
(sub) Zak Boggs – N/R
Added little as a late sub.
(sub) Diego Fagundez – N/R
Unsurprisingly pushed off the ball fairly easily. Attempted volley went high of the net and turnover started the play leading to the Crew’s third goal.
