Revs Waive Three

The New England Revolution survived today’s MLS Expansion Draft unscathed, but waived three players after the Draft ended. Rookies Alan Koger, Andrew Sousa and Otto Loewy were waived by the team and went unselected in this afternoon’s Waiver Draft.

None of the three rookies featured in any MLS action, but played regularly for the Revolution Reserves and in U.S. Open Cup Qualifying. Koger was a third round selection in the 2011 MLS SuperDraft, Sousa was a third round pick in the 2011 MLS Supplemental Draft and Loewy was signed in March after trialing with the Revs in the preseason.

Koger, 24, scored two goals in 10 MLS Reserve League games, playing mostly in his preferred position at striker, but also being forced to play center back in several games due to the Revs lack of depth in defense. He also scored the game winning goal against D.C. United in a U.S. Open Cup qualifier in April. He joined the Revs after an impressive four years at the College of William & Mary.

Sousa, 22, a Fall River, Mass. native, scored twice for the Revs Reserves in eight appearances, mainly as a center midfielder. Prior to joining the Revs, Sousa played at Providence College and for the Rhode Island Stingrays.

Loewy, 24, played seven games at center back for the Revs Reserves, scoring once. He had an impressive career at Winthrop University and graduated in 2009, but suffered a fracture lower right leg that kept him from being drafted in the 2009 MLS SuperDraft. That injury seemed to end his professional hopes, until he earned a trial when the Revs were in preseason training near his hometown in Georgia.

New head coach Jay Heaps was in attendance at the final Revs Reserve game of the season, a 5-1 loss to the Columbus Crew Reserves, in which several Revs, including Loewy and Koger, put in underwhelming performances.
