Revs Deny Claims Contained in Feb. 1 Zerka Story
- Updated: February 2, 2012
On Thursday, the New England Revolution contacted New England Soccer Today to deny the claim of the unnamed source contained in the “Zerka Not Returning” article published on Feb. 1.
In the aforementioned article, the source told New England Soccer Today that Revolution head coach Jay Heaps and general manager Michael Burns “never had serious discussions to try to bring [Monsef] Zerka back.” The Revolution, through their media relations department, asserted that the team did, in fact, attempt to re-sign the French winger and bring him back for the 2012 season.
While we regret that we did not originally contact the team for a response, the source – whom we have independently verified as having first-hand knowledge of the negotiations – stands by its story “100%.”
Further, the source advises that Zerka wanted to remain with the Revolution. But after preliminary contract talks were conducted, the source asserts that the club repeatedly stalled during the negotiation process before it eventually notified him that it had decided to go in a different direction.
The team denies this assertion and claim they did, in fact, work to keep him at the club.
