Breakers Beat Fury 2-1

The Boston Breakers claimed their franchise-best third straight victory to start the season in Wednesday’s 2-1 win over the New York Fury at Hofstra University in Long Island, N.Y.
Tameka Butt (10′) and Katie Schoepfer (19′) each scored first half tallies while Merritt Mathias (66′) scored the lone Fury goal.
“The way we came out and played, I was really happy with how we started,” Breakers Head Coach Lisa Cole said in a post-game release. “I’m excited how we rose to the challenge. I’m happy to get the win; it’s always good to get a road win against a good team.”
In keeping with the trend of early strikes, the Breakers took the lead in the 10th minute when Butt put away a feed from Courtney Jones. Schoepfer doubled the lead in the 19th minute with her team-leading third goal of the season, finishing a play set up by Kyah Simon.
Although the Fury came into the game even with the Breakers in the standings, the hosts weren’t able to match their guests through the first 45.
But New York approached the second half with a renewed focus on finding the back of the net. In the 66th minute, Mathias scored her league-leading fourth goal of the season to pull New York within one.
“They changed their system and kind of went after us in the second half,” Cole said. “We knew they were going for the win, so we settled in and changed our system to even things out.”
However, Mathias’ strike was the only reply the Fury would file, as the Breakers survived to seal their second road victory of the season.
The Breakers take on the Western New York Flash on Saturday night at Dilboy Stadium in Somerville, Mass.
