Hydra Sink Voltage

After a scoreless first half, the Worcester Hydra and Vermont Voltage scored five goals in a 21 minute span in the second half that sent the Hydra away with three points in a 3-2 victory in front of 241 at South Burlington High School on Saturday night.

Seeking to win three in a row after starting the season on a 10 game winless streak, Vermont (2-9-2, 8 points) looked to be in good shape against Worcester (4-3-5, 17 points), taking a 2-1 lead just before the hour mark. It wouldn’t last, however, as the Hydra’s Alencar Junior would score two goals in an eight minute span to put the Hydra ahead by the 69th minute – a lead the visitors wouldn’t relinquish.

A scoreless first half – one that saw the Voltage outshoot the visiting Hydra, 8-3 – led to a wild second 45 minutes that started when the Hydra earned a penalty kick less than three minutes after the break. Charlie Rugg would make no mistake, finishing off the spot kick past Ryan Brooks-Newton to put the visitors up 1-0.

The Voltage would respond 10 minutes later with Victor Tozelli cleaning up a scramble in the Hydra box for his first goal of the season. A minute later, Bozidar Jelovac would put the Voltage on top, 2-1, with his 5th goal of the season – all five coming in Vermont’s past three games.

But, Worcester weren’t about to roll over. Alencar Junior would level the game in the 61st minute – just two minutes after Vermont had taken the lead. The Brazilian would then put the Hydra in the lead for good with his team- and PDL Northeast Division-leading eighth goal of the season eight minutes later.

Despite currently holding down sixth place, the Hydra are now in touching distance of a playoff spot – just three points out of second place.  Worcester travels to face the Ottawa Fury on Sunday, July 1, at 3pm.

The Voltage, who sit just one point out of last place in seventh, finish off the season with their first three games of the year at Collins-Perley Sports Complex in St. Albans, VT. Up next is the first-place GPS Portland Phoenix on Saturday, July 7, at 7pm.
