Dante Marini played the hero in Northeastern’s (14-2-4) 1-0 upset win over Boston College (8-5-6) during Wednesday’s first round match of the NCAA Men’s Soccer Tournament at Parson Field.
Marini found the back of the net in the 14th minute when Don Anding nodded a Nikko Lara flip-throw in toward the far post, where Marini put it through.
From there, Huskies’ keeper Oliver Blum kept the sheet clean, making a career-high nine saves on the evening.
The Northeastern win sends them to Storrs, Conn., where they’ll face fourth-seeded Connecticut (15-3-1) on Sunday at 1pm.
Meanwhile, Brown (13-2-3) secured a 2-0 win over Drexel (12-3-3) in their first round matchup behind the efforts of Thomas McNamara and Daniel Taylor at Vidas Field in Philadelphia.
McNamara opened the account in the 17th minute, while Taylor made it a two-goal advantage in the 42nd minute. Bears keeper Sam Kernan-Schloss made five saves to send his club through to the second round, where Brown will face second-seeded Maryland (17-1-2) in College Park, Md. on Sunday at 5pm.
