LUSA: E.P. Sports Sits Out Rest of Season
- Updated: June 14, 2013
Defending LUSA Super Cup and Cup winners East Providence Sports called it a season this week, according a LUSA release issued on Wednesday.
The release notified all affiliated clubs that East Providence and Benfica Washington Park, “have decided not to continue their affiliation with LUSA for 2013.” As a result, both clubs were disqualified from the league for the remainder of the season.
East Providence began the season 0-2-1, their worst start in recent memory. Their last game came on Jun. 2, when they salvaged a 4-4 draw against Cranston PC.
Prior to that, they fell 6-0 to Taunton Sports on May 18 in a game in which they did not carry any substitutes.
Compounding their early season woes, the club was unable to secure Riverside Recreation Park as their home field this season. Over the winter, the city of East Providence removed the goalposts from the field, which is currently being used as a softball field.
East Providence boasts a tradition of winning in LUSA. In 2010, they won the “treble,” and in the past, fielded teams that included current U.S. Men’s National Team regular Geoff Cameron, and former New York Red Bulls and Toronto FC defender Danleigh Borman.
It is unclear at this juncture if the club has any intentions of returning to LUSA in 2014.
