WPSL: Mutiny Fall to Aces in Semifinals

Substitute Shelby Halasz brought the New England Mutiny within a goal of leveling terms in the first half, but the undefeated Houston Aces pulled away in the second stanza to win 4-1 and claim a spot in Sunday’s WPSL Final in Elk Grove, Calif.
In the 35th minute, Halasz grabbed a pass from from Andrea Plucenik and sent it into the right corner after Lauri Byrne and Jackie Acevedo struck in the 2nd and 25th minutes, respectively. The Aces pulled away late as Acevedo scored again in the 75th minute, while Carlie Banks capped the scoring in stoppage time.
The Aces (will play the winner of Saturday’s contest between the Gulf Coast Texans and the San Diego SeaLions for chance at the league championship on Sunday.
Houston went straight to the board inside of two minutes when she went alone on goal and sent it past Niki Dieter for the early lead.
The Aces doubled up in the 25th minute when McKenna Waitley sent a ball ahead for Acevedo, who sent another past Dieter.
Halasz grabbed a goal for her side ten minutes later when Plucenik found her inside the 18, where the subsitute scored to put the Mutiny within one.
It stayed a one-goal game until the final 15 minutes arrived. Acevedo chipped a shot over Dieter in the 75th minute to reclaim the two-goal advantage, then Banks put the game out of reach when Melanie Adelman fed her in front of frame in stoppage time.
The Mutiny finish the 2013 season 8-1-5 (29 points), while the Aces march on with a 12-0-0 (36 points) record.
