With the Uruguay U-20s already clinching first place in Group B at the South American Youth Football Championship, the team made wholesale changes for its final group match against Venezuela, including starting New England Revolution forward Diego Fagundez. Fagundez went 74 minutes before being substituted out of the match as hosts Uruguay suffered their first loss, 1-0 to last place Venezuela.
Venezuela U-20s took the lead in the 27th minute through Jaime Moreno. It was Venezuela’s first goal of the tournament after being shutout in their first four games.
Things took a turn for the worse for Venezuela, however, when Luis Jimenez Vivas picked up his second yellow card of the match and was ejected in the 63rd minute, leaving his side down a man the rest of the game.
Fagundez was substituted out of the match for Jaime Báez with Uruguay’s final substitution in the 74th minute.
Uruguay thought they had equalized in the 94th minute through Agustín Ale, but the goal was ruled out for a foul after protests.
Uruguay begins play in the final group stage against Brazil on Monday, January 26th. The first four placed teams in the six team group will qualify for the 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup.
