Kate Howarth scored twice in the waning moments to send the New England Mutiny to a 2-1 comeback win over New York AC in Saturday’s season opener at East Longmeadow High School in East Longmeadow, Mass.

With the Mutiny down in the latter stages after Natalie Romine struck in the 56th minute for the guests, Howarth leveled it in the 84th minute. The Mutiny striker tallied the game winner in the 94th minute to send the East Longmeadow crowd home happy.

After a scoreless first half, New York broke through with the hour mark approaching. Romine fired a shot that was initially denied by Mutiny keeper Kristyn Shea, but the New York striker redirected the rebound into the back of the net.

Romine’s goal emboldened the hosts, who pressed for the equalizer in the latter stages. Their efforts were rewarded when Andrea Plucenik speared down the flank and crossed it for Howarth, who pushed it through to put the match back on level terms.

But Howarth’s performance was far from finished. In the dying seconds, she blasted a shot that found the back of the net, allowing the Mutiny to pocket all three points.

With the win, the Mutiny kick off their WPSL campaign atop the Power 5 division standings with a 1-0-0 (3 points) record.

The Mutiny return to action on Jun. 6 against Jersey Blues at Northampton High School in Northampton, Mass.
