PDL: Blues Survive Boston Barrage in Draw
- Updated: July 5, 2015
Two days after making a couple of critical saves in Friday’s draw at Lusitano Stadium, AC Connecticut keeper Steve Sasso was superlative once again in Sunday’s 1-1 draw to Real Boston Rams on Sunday at Milton High School in Milton, Mass.
Sasso registered seven saves to thwart a Boston outfit that outshot Connecticut 21-5. Frantzdy Pierrot’s 69th minute effort was the only ball that beat the Blues’ keeper, whose strong performance allowed his side to claim a brief lead in the 65th minute on David Abunaw’s first career PDL goal.
The draw stretched the Blues unbeaten streak to three (1-0-2) and extended the Rams undefeated run to five (4-0-1).
Following a first half in which they were outgunned 12-2 on the shot chart, Connecticut persevered just after the hour mark. Jannik Eckenrode raced into the Boston end and sent a cross into the box for Abunaw, who buried it from close range to give the guests the shock lead.
But that lead didn’t last long. After failing to clear a dangerous ball out the area, Connecticut could only watch as Pierrot pounced on it and put it through to level it four minutes later.
Connecticut defender Ashton Pett was called upon to preserve the result in the 80th minute when he cleared a dangerous Boston shot off the line.
Connecticut will return to action on Friday at 6:00pm in their home finale against GPS Portland Phoenix at Western Connecticut State University in Danbury, Ct. The Rams will head north to face Seacoast United Phantoms at 7:00pm on Tuesday at Portsmouth High School in Portsmouth, N.H.
