Maddy Evans scored her second goal of the season in the dying minutes, but it was too little, too late for the Breakers as they fell 3-1 to the first-place Seattle Reign on Wednesday at Memorial Stadium in Seattle, Wash.

Evans’ strike in the 88th minute allowed the guests to salvage some measure of success after the hosts opened up a three-goal lead before the hour mark. Megan Rapinoe opened the scoring in the 21st minute while Kendall Fletcher doubled the advantage in the 34th minute. Kim Little added to the lead in the 56th minute to put the match out well out of the Breakers’ reach.

With the loss, the Breakers are certain to finish the season in last place with only one game remaining after their record dropped to 4-12-3 (15 points). The Reign improved to 12-3-3 (39 points), widening the gap between them and the second-place Chicago Red Stars (29 points).

After the Reign put a three-spot on the Breakers thanks to the Rapinoe-led offense, Evans quashed any hopes the Reign held of collecting the clean sheet when he grabbed a pass from Kristie Mewis in the the area, then quickly put it out of the reach of Hope Solo in the 88th minute.

The Breakers will close out the 2015 campaign on Sunday in the Longhorn State where they’ll face the Houston Dash at BBVA Compass Stadium. Kickoff is set for 8:30pm ET.
