Breakers Fall Short in Finale
- Updated: August 31, 2015
A bright finish to an otherwise disappointing season simply wasn’t meant to be for the Breakers in Sunday’s season finale after dropping a 1-0 loss to the Houston Dash at BBVA Compass Stadium.
Ella Masar scored the lone goal in the 34th minute while Erin McLeod stopped five shots to preserve the shutout victory for the Dash. McLeod’s counterpart, Alyssa Naeher, finished the match with five saves of her own.
With the loss, the Breakers finish the season at the bottom of the standings on 15 points with a 4-3-13 record. The Dash upped their total to 23 points with a 6-8-5 mark, and will conclude their regular season campaign against Chicago on Sunday.
The Breakers’ best chance at finding the board came in the 51st minute when Kristie Mewis whipped a free kick that McLeod misplayed before it fell to Kasey Kallman, who was looking at an open net. But Kallman’s chip was too heavy, and the shot buzzed over the bar.
Some late heroics from Naeher kept the Breakers within striking distance after she made a one-on-one stop of Carli Lloyd in the 85th minute. But the offense failed to hold its end of the bargain before the final whistle of the 2015 season.
The Breakers will likely kick off their preseason in March before kicking off the 2016 NWSL season in April.
