USOC: Southie FC Offense Too Much for GPS Omens
- Updated: November 16, 2015
Southie FC booked its spot in the third qualifying round of the 2016 U.S. Open Cup by staking a convincing 4-0 win over GPS Omens on Sunday at Lawrence Veterans Stadium in Lawrence, Mass.
Southie jumped out to a three-goal lead going into halftime after Chris Stoker set up goals for Tim Ritter (third minute), Trevor Hoxsie (23rd minute) and Anthony Baumann (35th minute). Roy Sandeman capped the scoring on a 71st minute free kick that settled into the back of the net.
With the win, Southie, which won the MSSL North Division earlier this year after posting an unbeaten season (9-0-1), became the sole New England-based amateur side from the 36-team Open Division to advance to the third qualifying round of the tournament. Seven New England amateur sides were awarded Open Division berths by U.S. Soccer in September.
U.S. Soccer will announce the third qualifying round matchups on Jan. 7, 2016. The third qualifying round will take place during the weekend of Apr. 2-3, 2016.
Coincidentally, Southie and GPS Omens will meet again on Wednesday for the third round of the USASA National Amateur Cup.
