Former Western Mass Pioneers goalkeeper Joey Kapinos is headed to Argentina after he was called in for U.S. Futsal National Team camp in Buenos Aires on Friday.
Kapinos, who suited up for the Pioneers in 2012 and 2013, was one of 15 players named to head coach Keith Tozer’s roster for the international camp and friendlies.
The Ludlow, Mass. native previously represented the US Futsal National Team during the 2015 WMF World Cup. He is currently a member of the Cedar Rapids Rampage of Major Arena Soccer League (MASL).
Prior to the season, Kapinos collected 584 saves, and recorded a .715 save percentage over the last three seasons with the Rochester Lancers (2014-15) and the Detroit Waza Flo (2012-13, 2013-14).
In his first year in the league, Kapinos, who attended Southern New Hampshire University, set the Detroit club record for wins in a season with 13, helping the team to a US Arena Open Cup championship and earning himself all-league second team plaudits.
Prior to the 2015-16 season, he was recruited to play for MASL expansion side Hartford City FC, which folded days before the it was set to debut last November.
The U.S.’s upcoming contests will help the team as it prepares for the 2016 CONCACAF Futsal Championship, which is set to take place from May 4-14 in Costa Rica.
The U.S. will face Canada in a set of play-in matches to start their World Cup Qualifying journey, with the first match on May 4 and the second on May 6, both kicking off at 10 p.m. ET.
The winning team of the play-in matches will be placed in Group B with host Costa Rica, Curacao and Cuba.
