Another Summer Stuck at Home

Horvath-1

The U.S. Men’s National Team Under-23s will be stuck at home for the second straight Summer Olympic tournament after falling 2-1 (3-2 on aggregate) to Colombia in Tuesday’s Qualifying Playoff 2nd Leg at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Tx.

After securing a 1-1 draw in Colombia on Friday, the U.S. conceded a 30th minute Roger Martínez goal to go down 2-1 on aggregate.

A Deiber Machado own goal restored hope for the young Americans in the 57th minute, but it was short-lived after Martinez struck again in the 64th minute.

The situation for the U.S. deteriorated rapidly from there, as second-half substitute Luis Gil was sent off in the 77th minute.

Matt Miazga was dismissed 13 minutes later, leaving the hosts with only nine men when the final whistle blew on their quest to compete in Rio this summer.

The U.S. last participated in Olympic action during the 2008 Games in Beijing, where it posted a 1-1-1 record but did not advance past the group stage.
