Revs waive Augustine
- Updated: June 8, 2011
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – When the New England Revolution signed Nigerian midfielder Michael Augustine on March 4th, the 18-year-old was looked at as a promising prospect for the future. Three months later, the youngster’s stint with the Revs has come to an abrupt end with the club announcing the former FCT Abuja (Nigeria) player has been waived.
In announcing Augustine’s signing, Revolution Vice President of Player Personnel Michael Burns was quoted as saying “Michael is a young midfielder who we believe can have a promising future in our league”. After failing to impress and never making a first team appearance, Augustine’s time with the Revs has concluded and his days in MLS are likely over as well.
Augustine, an outside midfielder, joined the Revs at a time when spots in the midfield were largely for the taking. With the Revs outside midfielders showing a lack of consistency in 2010 and thus far in 2011, Augustine seemingly had plenty of opportunities to challenge for a spot in the line-up. Despite getting several opportunities with the reserves, in preseason, and in the U.S. Open Cup, Augustine failed to impress and never registered a goal or an assist in any match.
The struggling Revs (3-6-4, 13 points) return to action on Friday, June 10th against the New York Red Bulls at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, N.J. The match can be seen live at 8:30p.m. on Fox Soccer Channel.
