Roster deadline passes quietly on Route 1

The New England Revolution, who have played with a short roster since waiving midfielder Joseph Niouky back on August 10th, failed to fill the vacancy before yesterday’s 5 p.m. roster deadline freeze.

The club, which has carried 23 players- one short of the league limit – for over a month, had invited a handful of trialists to training late in the summer in the hopes of filling the open spot. However, none of the trialists latched on, as the club continued to search for a replacement.

Given the litany of injuries the club has sustained – including the loss of Taylor Twellman for the entire season – it is somewhat surprising that the organization decided not to make a move to shore up the roster. It’s even more curious in light of the fact that manager Steve Nicol has played with a short bench for prolonged periods this season.

With the Revolution unlikely to reach the postseason for the first time in the Steve Nicol era, the Revolution will be forced to close out an underwhelming season undermanned.
