Aztec MA Out of WPSL Elite

It appears that New England soccer fans won't get the opportunity to catch Aztec MA face off against Commonwealth rival New England Mutiny in WPSL Elite this year after Aztec put its plans on hold for the 2012 season.

Only five weeks after undergoing a rebrand ahead of its inaugural season in WPSL Elite League, Aztec MA, formerly Boston Aztec, will not compete in the newly-formed league after all.

On Friday, the offical league website stated that the Beverly, Mass.-based club will be unable to participate in the 2012 WPSL Elite League season due to “due to unresolved scheduling conflicts.”

As of Sunday morning, the club’s official website had not made any mention of the aforementioned development. Earlier last week, the team announced Caitlin Pickul as its assistant general manager, and it appeared that the team was readying itself for the upcoming season. Prior to the announcement, the team had 23 player commitments, according to the WPSL website.

But now it appears that the Aztec won’t be joining its fellow Commonwealth-based clubs Boston Breakers and New England Mutiny for the first season of WPSL Elite.

In its place, the league added the New York Fury to keep eight teams within in the fold. The newest team is looking at Hofstra University as its home, but other locations are being scouted as well.
