Simon Strikes in Breakers’ Last-Minute Win

Kyah Simon scored a minute before full time to deliver the Breakers to a 1-0 win over the Chicago Red Stars on Saturday at Dilboy Stadium.

Simon’s league-leading 10th goal of the season gave the Breakers a share of first place with the Red Stars, with both teams on 24 points through 10 games.

The deciding goal was orchestrated by Courtney Jones, who crossed it into the area toward Katie Schoepfer inside the area. But instead of grabbing it and giving it a go, Schoepfer dummied it to Simon, who buried it to send the sellout crowd of 2,092 into a state of euphoria.

“I think we definitely needed her out there and definitely at the right time. She made a huge impact on the game,” Simon said of Jones in a post-game release. “Her pace, agility, and ability to play balls in was amazing and exactly what we needed. We needed that boost and that injection of pace up there, and she did it to a T, and to her credit, she was the main factor in our goal.”

The Breakers return to action on Jul. 6 when they welcome ASA Chesapeake Charge to Dilboy Stadium at 7pm.
