Phoenix Fly into Postseason

The Portland Phoenix finished off the PDL regular season by crushing the Boston Victory, 5-0, in front of a reported 225 at Scarborough High School.

The Phoenix (10-4-2, 32 points) had already clinched second place in the Northeast Division and a playoff spot heading into the match, while the loss means the Victory (3-11-2, 11 points), finish their inaugural season in last place in the eight team division.

Jason Massie opened the scoring for Portland in just the second minute with his fourth goal of the season off an assist from Blaike Woodruff. Eight minutes later Eric Anderson made it 2-0 from the penalty spot for his fifth goal of the season.

Benjamin Havey’s second goal of the year — off a Itode Fubara assist — would make it 3-0 in the 18th minute.

The Phoenix made wholesale changes in the second half and Keegan Ziada scored his second goal of the year in the 76th minute off an assist from John Murphy to make it 4-0. Murphy then turned provider, setting up Andrew Jones for his first goal of the year in the 82nd minute to push the lead to 5-0.

Victory goalkeeper Jason Katz made 10 saves in the loss.

Portland begins the playoffs on the road in Ottawa at the Algonquin College Soccer Complex against Ottawa Fury at 7p.m. Boston did not qualify for the playoffs.
