Fall River Sports claimed the 2012 Ligas Unidas Soccer Association title on Wednesday after edging Lincoln Club 3-2 at Billy Goncalves Field.

Lester Ramirez, Chris Arruda and Helder Porto all scored for Fall River while Nathan Avelar’s efforts between the sticks preserved the league-clinching victory.

“We were tired of watching other teams winning the championship every year,” Fall River Sports coach Bruno Ramos told O Jornal. “So we got some players from the lower clubs and we played well and we hope to renew our quest for a title (next year).”

Fall River, which upped its point total to 44 on Wednesaday, put enough distance on second-place East Providence Sports (37 points) to win the league with a week remaining in the regular season.

Fall River ran a ten-game unbeaten streak en route to its first league title since 1999. It was the first championship claimed by a Fall River club since Modern Snack Bar claimed the league in 2001.

Incidentally, Fall River and East Providence will close out the season against each other at 11am on Sunday at Riverside Recreation Park.

After the season finale, Fall River will turn its attention to grabbing its first Portuguese Cup since 1998. The Cup schedule kicks off during the weekend of September 8.
