On Friday, the Western Mass Pioneers announced that head coach Federico Molinari will return to the helm in 2013.

“I am glad to be the head coach of the Pioneers for another season,” Molinari said in a statement on Friday. “We were very close again to making the playoffs and I am excited to build on what we had in the 2012 season.”

During his first season in charge, the Pioneers finished third in PDL’s Northeast Division with a 6-4-6 record (24 points), missing the playoffs by eight points. The Pioneers allowed a division-low 11 goals as goalkeeper Warren Gross led all of PDL with nine clean sheets.

Prior to taking the coaching reins in 2012, Molinari, 33, played for the Pioneers from 2006-11 as a defender. He hails from La Plata, Argentina.
