Providence Shocks No. 3 UConn 1-0

Sophomore midfielder Marcos Ugarte scored the lone goal of the game as Providence upset No. 3 Connecticut 1-0 at Glay Field in Providence on Wednesday.

Ugarte’s goal came in the 55th minute, while Keasel Broome stopped three shots to lead the Friars to their fourth victory of the season.

Wednesday’s game marked only the third time the Huskies had trailed all season.

After a scoreless first half, the Friars didn’t have to wait long to find paydirt in the second frame. Keith Jecewiz sent a cross inside the area to Ugarte, who volleyed it past UConn keeper Andre Blake in the 55th minute.

From there, Broome did the rest by making a pair of saves in the final 10 minutes to hand the Huskies their second loss of the season.

The win upped Providence’s record to 4-9-2 (2-5-1 in the Big East) and keeps their flickering hopes of reaching the Big East Tournament alive. Wednesday’s defeat put Connecticut’s mark at 13-2-1 (5-2-0 in the Big East).

Despite the loss, the Huskies get their chance for redemption when they host the Friars at 4pm on Saturday at Joseph Morrone Stadium in Storrs, Conn.
