Liverpool, AS Roma return to Fenway

BOSTON – For the second time in the past two years English Premier League side Liverpool FC will face off against Italian Serie A club AS Roma at Fenway Park in a preseason friendly. The match is scheduled for Wednesday, July 23, almost exactly two years after AS Roma defeated Liverpool, 2-1, in front of a sold out crowd of 37,169 at the historic home of the Boston Red Sox.

Denmark international defender Daniel Agger is among those likely to appear for Liverpool FC in their game at Fenway park this July.

“Liverpool FC and AS Roma are two of the most highly regarded clubs in all of football, and we’re thrilled to welcome them back to Boston and showcase some of the world’s top talent playing the ‘Beautiful Game’ right here on the pitch at Fenway Park,” said Fenway Sports Group Chairman Tom Werner in a media release. “The atmosphere at their first Fenway match was electric, and with both clubs’ passionate supporters, tremendous worldwide following and strong ties to the City, the rematch is sure to be memorable.”

Liverpool, in the midst of their best season in recent history, currently sits in second place in the Premier League. Among their key players are England Internationals Steven Gerrard, Daniel Sturridge and Glen Johnson, Uruguay striker Luis Suárez, Brazil midfielder Lucas, and Belgium ‘keeper Simon Mignolet.

AS Roma are also having a strong season and hold second place in Serie A. Legendary Italian midfielder Francesco Totti, current Italian international Daniele De Rossi, Brazil defender Maicon, and Ivory Coast forward Gervinho are among their better known players.

Liverpool and AS Roma both have ties to the Boston Red Sox ownership. Red Sox owner John Henry took control of Liverpool in October 2010, while Fenway Sports Group partner Thomas DiBenedetto is part of AS Roma’s ownership group.

“Throughout its storied history, Fenway Park has hosted some of the best in athletic competition and served as a community gathering place for a diverse group of fans with a wide array of interests outside of baseball and even sports,” said Fenway Sports Management President and Boston Red Sox Chief Operating Officer Sam Kennedy in a media release. “We’re excited to continue this tradition by hosting two of the world’s top football clubs and are thankful to Mayor Walsh and his staff for helping us hold world class events that showcase the City of Boston to audiences across the globe.”

As part of their summer trip to America, Liverpool will also play matches in Chicago, New York and Charlotte. Roma has matches scheduled in Denver, Dallas and Philadelphia.

Tickets for the Fenway match are scheduled to go on sale on Friday, May 2.
