#TBT: Fall River F.C. Downs Falcos (9/24/1921)

Welcome to this week’s edition of “Throwback Thursday,” where we take a trip back in time to spotlight some of the clubs that made their mark on the New England soccer landscape over the past century.

This week, we venture back to the second week of American Soccer League play, where Fall River United headed north to face the Holyoke Falcos, who had just beaten the Spindle City aggregate 2-0 the previous week. The Uniteds entered the match seeking revenge for the season opening loss, while the Falcos were hoping to make a positive first impression on the local fans in their home opener.

Note: All information provided in the following game report was drawn from the September 25, 1921 edition of The Fall River Globe (Fall River, Mass.).

FALL RIVER F.C. DOWNS FALCOS

Connie Lynch Takes Field, Although in Poor Shape, Spears His Eleven to a 2 to 0 Win Over Holyoke Club – Locals Outplay Home Club on the Offense and  Defense

September 24, 1921

HOLYOKE, Mass. – A hobbled Connie Lynch scored the opening goal and Fall River United never looked back as they sealed a 2-0 win over the Holyoke Falcos on Saturday at the Berkshire Street Grounds.

Lynch, who suffered a broken leg the year previous, tallied in the 28th minute to give the guests the lead going into halftime. Tom McFarlane added another after the break while Chick Albion kept the sheet clean.

The win allowed the Uniteds to secure their first win of the season (1-1-0), while the loss prevented the Falcos (1-1-0)from allowing the local crowd to head home happy.

The Uniteds saw little danger in the first half as they outclassed the Falcos at their home grounds. In fact, the guests kept the ball out of its own end for 35 of the first 45 minutes. As for Lynch, the player-coach got made his return from injury a successful one when he grabbed a pass from Paddy Butler, bustled through Holyoke’s defense, and scored the first goal of the match.

Holyoke tried to respond in the second half, but they were rarely effective. While the hosts were trying to assemble an attack, the knocked on the door repeatedly, and crashed through when McFarlane blasted a shot from 20 yards that beat Patrick McManus.

The affair was a physical one, as referee Robert Muphy issued a number of warnings to the guilty parties.
