Sporting CP Update: 4/6

SCP1

Sporting Lisbon played Pacos de Ferreira on Saturday in league play. With Braga winning their match the night before, Sporting needed a win to maintain their nine point lead for third place.

Sporting had a 1-0 halftime lead with Islam Slimani netting his 10th league goal of the season. Early in the 2nd half, Sporting had two clear 1 v 1 chances to double their lead, and Joao Mario missed horribly on both occasions.

His day would only get worse as minutes later his pass to Carrillo was intercepted by Rodrigo Galo, who dribbled up to the edge of the penalty box and blasted a shot passed Rui Patricio, just under the cross bar, tying the game at 1-1, the final score. Their lead for third place is now at seven points with seven games left.

Sporting’s “B” team was back on the pitch this weekend as well. They hosted Leixoes and beat them 3-1. Diego Rubio scored again, continuing his hot form since returning on loan from Norway. With a new contract signed with the Leoes, and Slimani and Fredy Montero both linked with moves away from Sporting, we may see him return to the senior side next season.
