USASA: FA1 Welcomes ‘New’ Marksmen
- Updated: April 17, 2015
Newly-established Football Alliance of New England (FA1) announced on Friday that a club named the Fall River Marksmen will join the league for its inaugural season, which kicks off next month.
The ‘new’ Marksmen are the fourth club to join FA1. Earlier this week, the southeastern New England-based league announced that the Rhode Island Reds will field a team this season.
“Although this new re-birth of the name has no connection with the old club, it brings back to life a once famous name to the Spindle City,” read a statement from the league on its Facebook page.
The original Fall River Marksmen dominated the competition during the early part of the 20th century. They won four U.S. Open Cup titles, and seven American Soccer League titles with players like Billy Gonsalves and Alec McNab.
In addition to the Marksmen and Reds, Club Recordações de Portugal and Taunton Eagles will also compete in the new league. FA1 is expected to announce the addition of a New Bedford-based squad in the coming weeks.
