Revolution midfielder Jermaine Jones, who suffered a left groin strain during a 2-2 draw to LA Galaxy on May 31, underwent surgery earlier today to repair a bilateral sports hernia. He’s expected to miss 6-8 weeks according to a team release.

When asked about Jones’ injury earlier this week, coach Jay Heaps told the media that the medical staff was waiting for the swelling around Jones’ left groin to subside to fully assess it.

The 33-year-old midfielder missed last week’s game as a result of the injury, and is currently listed as “out” on the club’s latest injury report. Additionally, Jones was not listed on the U.S.’s provisional Gold Cup roster, which was released on Wednesday.

Following the game against LA, Jones spoke with the media about the extent of his injury, and wasn’t particularly optimistic about a favorable prognosis.

“Trust me, it’s really bad,” Jones said after the May 31 game. “I don’t feel really good with it. I worked to come back, and felt good, and now I have more pain than before. Nobody’s happy with that. It’s not good.”

In February, Jones underwent sports hernia surgery, forcing him to miss the club’s first five games of the season. Following the surgery, he revealed that he had played through the injury for over a year.
