Western Mass Pioneers goalkeeper Nick Valleca collected six saves, but his efforts weren’t enough to keep the Long Island Rough Riders from rolling en route a 3-0 win on Friday at Lusitano Stadium.

Valleca was able to repel the Riders through the first half, which was no small feat after he was called upon to deny an 18th minute penalty try. But Long Island eventually crashed the gate on multiple occasions during a furious, six-minute span early on the second half.

Matthew Wendelken opened the account in the 51st minute while Glen Reid widened the gap in the 55th minute. Joseph Holland capped the scoring in the 57th minute.

Valleca’s counterpart Joseph Martin made a pair of saves to collect the clean sheet for Long Island, which only allowed three shots during Friday’s inter-division clash.

The Pioneers’ loss dropped their record to 1-8-1 (4 points), while the Riders improved their mark to 7-2-1 (22 points).

Western Mass will return to action on Wednesday when they head to the Granite State to face the Seacoast United Phantoms at Portsmouth High School in Portsmouth, N.H. Kickoff is set for 7:00pm.
