It’s official: Revs to face Manchester United

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Revolution today confirmed the club will take on Manchester United on July 13th at Gillette Stadium as part of the 2011 World Football Challenge. Kickoff is slated for 8 p.m.

“We’re thrilled to bring Manchester United to Gillette Stadium,” Revolution Chief Operating Officer Brian Bilello said. “We’re looking forward to this chance for the Revolution to play such a historic opponent on our own field. This will be the biggest friendly match the Revolution has ever played, and we believe our fans will help make this a great memory for everyone who attends.”

United has frequently toured the United States as part of their preseason, including a visit last season that featured participating in the 2010 MLS All-Star game, but this will be their first ever meeting with the Revolution. United’s last appearance in New England came over 50 years ago, when they beat the Fall River Stars 7-0 in Fall River, MA, back in 1960.

United, who currently sit atop the Premier League, have finished been crowned champions of the highest division of English soccer 18 times. The Red Devils have also been a force in Europe, winning the UEFA Champions League three times, most recently during the 2007-2008 season.

The Revs matchup with Manchester United  is  part of the 2011 World Football Challenge, which will feature teams from Major League Soccer and top leagues around the world. Also confirmed for the event is Barcelona FC. United is also slated to play in the MLS All-Star game for the second year in a row at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, N.J., on June 27.
