Diego Fagundez wasn’t the only familiar face to make the Week 1 highlight reel in MLS.

Former Western Mass Pioneers striker Tommy McNamara scored a long-distance effort for New York City FC during the 10th minute of a wild 4-3 win over Chicago on Sunday at Toyota Park in Bridgeview, Ill.

“I don’t even remember how I got the ball,” McNamara told the media after the match. “But I knew that I had enough time and space to take a touch and wrap my foot around it and hit it back post. When it came off my foot, I just knew that it went in.”

McNamara, whose strike was nominated for MLS goal of the week, suited up for the Pioneers in 2011 while studying at Brown University. He was selected by Chivas USA in the second round (20th overall) of the 2013 MLS SuperDraft, and subsequently signed with New York City FC after the Goats were contracted following the 2014 season.

Meanwhile, another player with ties to the region etched his name on the scoresheet in Sunday’s City-Chicago clash. Former Revolution midfielder/forward Tony Taylor, who was selected by New York City during the 2014 expansion draft, tallied in the 29th minute for the guests.
